Whangaroa Harbour, North Island, Northland, New Zealand Three
Kings Weather & Safety Policy The
Three Kings is situated approx. 35 miles North of Cape Reinga. The Three Kings
Bank is a further 18 miles North of the Three Kings Islands. Due to merging
currents, the nature of steep upwellings at the Three Kings Rise, sea conditions
can become VERY rough in a very short space of time. Add to this an increase in
wind speed beyond 20 knots and the conditions can become down-right dangerous.
In our opinion, the
Three Kings area is not suited to boats of light displacement (say 13 tons or
less) or vessel lengths of less than 45 feet. We also strongly feel that the Three Kings is
not
suited to vessels with only 1 motor. Reel
Awesome Fishing Charters has a wet displacement of 20 tons, a length OA of 51 feet and twin
motors for your safety and comfort. Due to the lack of real “safe haven” protection at the Three Kings, if conditions at the Three Kings deteriorate beyond what the skipper considers to be safe to operate in the area, the skipper will make the following decision; Should
at any time during the charter the skipper consider that the weather conditions
make it unsafe to fish the Three Kings area, the skipper will reduce
the remaining charter days to local area which in this instance will include the
North Cape area .
In this event, the daily rate will be adjusted down to the local
area-fishing rate and the appropriate refund will be provided at the end of the
charter.
